Phonics
Phonics is how we teach the children to read and spell.
The children begin in Reception learning the phase 2 single letter sounds. As the year progresses they will move onto phase 3 sounds and usually end the year with a gentle introduction to phase 4 if required.
In year one the children will begin with a quick recap of Phase 3 before moving into phase 4. It would be envisaged that the children would begin phase 5 phonics around term 2, after Christmas and end the year touching on phase 6. The children in year one will have a phonics screening test where they are tested on their phonic knowledge reading real and 'alien' words that include sounds from phases 2-5.
You can read more about this below and we will of course explain more about this process closer to the
assessment next year.
