Wellbeing

Emotional Wellbeing

We know that the emotional health of children is the strongest predictor of happiness in adulthood and we want all of our children to grow up to be happy, confident, independent people who can contribute positively to society and "Imagine, Believe and Achieve." At Bruton Primary, we have a key role to play in enabling pupils and families to develop positive emotional wellbeing so that they are able to:

  • access their learning,
  • develop resilience,
  • develop the ability to problem solve,
  • ensure positive health (inc. mental health) development.

Happier children learn better and generally perform better in school. Poor mental health undermines educational attainment and life satisfaction.

Broadly, emotional wellbeing refers to the way a person thinks and feels about themselves and others.

It includes being able to adapt and deal with daily challenges (resilience and coping skills) while leading a fulfilling life.

Emotional wellbeing includes being happy and confident, but nobody can feel happy all the time.

People with good wellbeing can problem-solve, manage emotions, experience empathy, be resilient and attentive. They also have good relationships with others.

5 Ways to Wellbeing

Take Notice: Take some time to enjoy the moment and the environment around you.

Give: Participation in social and community life has attracted a lot of attention in the field of wellbeing research.

Be active: Exercise is essential for slowing age-related cognitive decline and for promoting wellbeing.

Keep Learning: Continued learning through life enhances self-esteem and encourages social interaction and a more active life.

Connect: feeling close to, and valued by, other people.

Wellbeing is paramount to our whole school approach. We pride ourselves on knowing our families well which allows us to identify need and provide support in a timely manner.

When we refer to families we not only mean our children, parents and wider family units but also our staff as they too are part of our Bruton family. As such, their wellbeing is also of the utmost importance.

We have a wellbeing action group, which is made up of children, parents and staff who work towards making mental health and wellbeing a focus for the whole school and develop SEMH across the school curriculum.

Resources to support Wellbeing:

In this section you will find links to several websites that we use ourselves and that we often signpost parents and carers too. There is a mixture of further information and also resources that you can use at home with your children to support their mood and emotional literacy (they may also be of some benefit to the adults as well).
