Autumn One

Marvellous Mapping

This term our topic is 'Marvellous Mapping'. A fun and engaging topic for the children to begin their year with! This topic will focus on Geography and Art. The children will find out about aerial and 3D maps, use a key, create their own map, learn about points on a compass and what we use maps for. In Art we will be looking at the artists Hundertwasser and Henry Moore. For more detailed information about what the children will be learning please look at the Parent Overview document (below). We send a paper copy of this at the beginning of the term.

Occasionally the plans will adapt and change as we follow the children's interests.

Reading - The expectation is that the children read, at home, three times a week. If the children are on the Accelerated Reader scheme, they can bring in their books as soon as they are finished and then complete a short comprehension quiz on the book. The children have to achieve 80% or above in three consecutive quizzes before they can move up a level. All the AR books are kept in the library and the children are responsible for choosing their own text. Please let us know if there is a problem with the book selected and they can easily change it.

The children on  phonics books will have their reading book changed at least twice a week - this happens on Mondays and Thursdays.

Spelling - Both Year 1 and Year 2 children have spelling lists that it would be of benefit for them to learn each week. They could practise writing these out at home in a variety of ways and the Year 2 children will have a spelling test each Friday.

P.E. - . Please could the correct kit be worn and long hair needs to be tied up.

Swimming - We will continue to swim on a Thursday as long as the conditions allow, so swim kits on a Thursday please! Children will need a one-piece swim suit, towel, goggles and slip on style shoes to walk to and from the pool. No armbands will be required.
