We have been looking at warm and cool colours. We had to sort the paintings out according to whether it was predominately warm or cool colours, then use watercolour paints to demonstrate whether we could make warm and cool colours by mixing in a palette.
KS1 Art Day - What a fun day!
Today we experimented with red cabbage. We watched as our Teacher used boiling water to extract the colour from the cabbage. Then we added the coloured water to different liquids. When we added the cabbage liquid to lemon juice it turned pink. Then we added it to the bicarbonate of soda and it changed to blue. This is because the lemon juice is an acid and the bicarbonate of soda is an alkali and these affect the colours of water.
Today we carried out a colour mixing experiment. We used kitchen roll to move coloured water between different cups. We observed as the different primary colours mixed together to create secondary colours.
We have begun our unit on measurement by measuring objects by length using non-standard units of measurements. The children has to use cubes to measure the length of items around the classroom and record how many cubes long they were. Some of them even measured each other!
We have been learning about tints and shades. We discovered that a tint is when you make a colour lighter by adding white and a shade is when you make a colour darker by adding black.
We had a lovely time on the field this afternoon practicing football skills.
Colour mixing - we have been looking at what the primary colours are and then using them to make secondary colours. We had great fun exploring with the different colours!
Our English text this term is 'The Day The Crayons Quit'. To our surprise all the crayons in Cuckoo Class have quit as well! We discussed what it means to quit something and go on strike, like the crayons. We then held our own protest as if we were fed up colouring pencils.
We began our Quest by comparing two contrasting pieces of art. We looked at a piece by Monet and a piece by Mondrian. We discussed the different material and techniques both artists may have used, their colour selection and how they may have created them. We then had a go at recreating both in our sketch books.
