In Year One the children need to be able to identify a half, quarter, 3 quarters and a whole.
This is much easier learned using practical things they can clearly see - for example, a pizza or a slice of bread. This then transfers to the skill of understanding that one half is one piece out of two so when we have a number and find half - we only count one part. For example, if you split 6 apples into half you will have 3 on one side so 1/2 of 6 = 3. Please do this as practically as you can with your child but there are some sheets here to assess their understanding if you wish to use them.
